The story of the Foss family, who live on a Mississippi River shanty boat in 1939, and are torn apart when their children are taken and placed in a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage. The novel intertwines their story with that of Avery Stafford, a modern-day woman who begins to uncover secrets about her own family history and its connection to the orphanage scandal. The book is inspired by the real-life Tennessee Children’s Home Society, where children were kidnapped and illegally adopted out by Georgia Tann.
