Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) is regarded as one of the greatest American, realist painters of the 19th century. He painted hundreds of portraits of his family, friends and famous people as well as outdoor scenes and sporting events. He strove to achieve accuracy and detail without losing feeling. He was a fine arts educator who influenced young artists.
