Book Discussion: Sister Citizen by Melissa V. Harrris-Perry

Facilitated by Representative Litesa Wallace and Karen Gutierrez

Melissa V. Harris-Perry gives us a groundbreaking book that explores stereotypes such as lasciviousness, devotion, and outspoken anger that black women encounter every day in contemporary American life. These hurtful and dishonest representations shame and shape their experiences as citizens. The book uses multiple perspectives to understand more deeply--black women's political and emotional responses to race and gender images. Sister Citizen explores how African American women understand themselves as citizens and how a shared struggle to preserve the authentic self, links all women together.
