Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) was an American artist working in Modernism, photography and Precisionism, which was a movement that involved clarity of technique and subject matter. Charles Sheeler, Charles Demuth, Gerald Murphy and others were part of this movement usually portraying typical motifs like architecture, manufactured objects and machinery in an impersonal manner. In Sheeler's paintings, tensions are displayed between abstraction and representation, objectivity and subjectivity as well as painting and photography.
